Lynn Shanks: Places and Faces

Title: Places and Faces

Places and Faces is a selection of works from my two main focus areas – landscapes and living creatures. The landscapes presented in this show vary in medium and approach, because I enjoy experimenting and, for now at least, choose not to limit myself to a specific style. Acrylic, watercolor, and oil are all represented here. My landscapes are always devoid of people, mainly because I value the serenity of a quiet place in nature, and of land not overdeveloped by humankind.

As for the faces, I typically focus on birds, dogs, and people, with a recent emphasis on children. Here again, you will see acrylic, watercolor, and oil paintings. This is the first time I’m showing the series, What About the Children. These works are about the future of today’s youngest generation. Each painting represents childhood, innocence lost, the threats ahead, and the possibility that these children may also be the solution.

About the Artist

My work is an observation of ordinary beauty, in both nature and humanity. I use mainly acrylic or watercolor paints to capture and share my unique perspective on a common subject. I don’t attempt to replicate; I use color and movement to offer my own interpretation of a place, person, or thing. The Adirondack region I call home is a source of endless inspiration, as are the people in my life. Landscapes and living creatures are a staple in my work, while more recently I have gravitated toward portraits of children. I love that art in every form celebrates individuality, while also encouraging a collective experience. I hope my paintings are a reminder to viewers that our natural environment and our liberties should not be taken for granted…both are vulnerable and must be protected.

Lynn works in her home studio in Queensbury, NY.  Her paintings have been exhibited at several regional galleries, including Tannery Pond Center in North Creek, Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester, The Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy, Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council in Glens Falls, Saratoga Springs Library, and more.
