Michael Lopez: Star NurseriesJune 7th – June 29thArtist reception will be held June 7th from 3-5 pm. The public is welcome!
A former award-winning journalist, current architectural historian and newfound emerging artist, Michael Lopez will showcase his latest work in a month-long exhibit at the Valley Artisans Market gallery in Cambridge, NY. An opening reception for the “Star Nurseries” exhibit will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on June 7 at the gallery, located at 25 E. Main Street in the Washington County village of Cambridge. The exhibit runs through June 29. “Star Nurseries” explores in watercolor the formation and death of stars, born in nebulae of gas and dust, killed and reborn in the unimaginable explosions of supernovas. The watercolor star nurseries might be considered allegories about how we are born into an uncertain world, live sadly or happily or neither, then die, some of us hoping for an afterlife. But they also are a sheer celebration of color, and movement, so effectively translated by the fluidity of watercolor. “When people say these pieces are beautiful, I’m of course flattered, but also deeply humbled and grateful for a phenomenon that makes this artistic exploration so possible.” Lopez, an Auburn, NY, native, was a newspaper reporter for 17 years before switching careers and becoming an architectural historian, researching and evaluating historic buildings for adaptive reuse. He is a multi-media artist. Located in historic Hubbard Hall in Cambridge, NY, and amid the rolling hills of Washington County in upstate New York, Valley Artisans Market is one of the oldest arts cooperatives in the country. Local fine artists and craftsmen work in a variety of hand-crafted media including glass, paper, cloth, photography, oil paintings, pastels, wood, mosaic, sculpture, metal, jewelry, ceramics and more. The Small Gallery features rotating shows by members and guest artists, and the market is always staffed by one of its artisan members. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday to Sunday. |
